Hi, this is Julie from 19 Nocturne Boulevard! Listening to the first show (not through the whole thing yet) and wanted to comment on the hyper-religious types. Yup, they show up a LOT – whether bad like in The Gunslinger, or good, like the kid in Desperation, but there’s also a secular equivelent as well, in the bad dad in The Langoliers (not religioius, just horrible and drove Bronson Pinchot over the edge to be a DO-BEE). King has this way of portraying the super-creepy maddeningly obsessed, regardless of the object of obssession. Can’t wait til you discuss the “touched by god” aspect of the holy power of the disabled. M-O-O-N that spells moon.
OK, finished listening (at least you have one listener!)
A couple more comments:
Rocks from the Sky – this is a fairly iconic manifestation, attributed either to poultergeist activity or latent psychic abilities. It’s an occurance you hear of a lot if you read a lot of accounts of that sort of thing. Also mentioned in The Haunting (Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House) in connection with the main character, Nell.
One thing about Carrie – the 70s were HUGE on ESP and other paramornal kinds of stuff. With shows like In Search Of and That’s Incredible hashing it over and over again, it’s not surprising stuff like this was taken fro granted (as you mentioned in the show). The “news account” tone to the book almost certainly is because of the huge piles of ostensibly non-fiction books, ranging from The Amityville Horror, to Sybil (I always thought of the abusive mother in this “real-life” account must have inspires King some) dealing with supernatural / psychic / psychological topics.
If you want to see the ultimate parody of the “Carrie kills her mom” scene, check out Bloodbath at the House of Death. It’s a bit choppy as a horror [parody overall, but some scenes are priceless, and death by can opener is one of them.
Shoot me a promo and I’ll play it on my show!
Hey, fellas. Blake from the 2 in 1 Showcase podcast here. Nice premiere episode — I’ve been looking for more horror-themed shows to add to the ol’ iPod, particularly shows that focus on books (as there seem to be blessedly few of those). This show may be what finally gets me off my ass to read some of the early King works I’ve never gotten around to before. (Such as, I’m ashamed to admit, Cujo.)
When you get there chronologically, will you cover alternative King works? The Creepshow graphic novel, his nonfiction books, the new American Vampires comic?
I don’t know. I would imagine that we would at some point. Not sure if we’d dedicate an entire episode to each one or find a way to attach them to other episodes. But I’m sure we’d call upon a comics expert whenever we got there! Thanks for listening man. Hope you enjoyed yourself.
Awesome first show guys! Thank you very much. I eagerly await the next… I consider myself a Stephen King fan even though I’ve only actually read a few of his works. (Green Mile, The Shining, Gerald’s Game, Night Shift, Skeleton Crew and It) I am very fond of his short stories.
I was wondering if you guys like LOST? And if you do you probably already know that King is a big fan too. Turns out that LOST and “The Stand” have many things in common.
Anyway I was just wondering… keep it up guys and thanks.
I am a huge LOST fan. Can’t wait till this Sunday. Going to be a bittersweet night. Well I hope that you enjoy our show and that you find it informative.
